North Judson-San Pierre Junior/Senior High School is tweaking its dress code and attendance policies. The school board approved an updated student handbook last month.
Dean of Students Kent Chezem explained that up until now sleeveless shirts were prohibited for girls but technically allowed for boys. The new handbook clears up that discrepancy by requiring sleeves for everyone. Pants are not permitted to have holes above the knee that show the skin.
When it comes to attendance, students who lose credit due to unexcused absences can now “buy back” class periods by attending after-school detention or Saturday school. Chezem also said that students have to be in school by 10:30 a.m. to be eligible to take part in extracurricular activities, unless there are verified absences like doctor’s appointments or court appearances.
The handbook for elementary school students will be up for approval tomorrow.
