Oregon-Davis Teacher Launching SIDS Prevention Foundation following Death of Infant Son

An Oregon-Davis teacher is turning her own personal tragedy into a chance to prevent other families from experiencing the loss of a child. The school board began last week’s meeting with a moment of silence, after one of Kindergarten Teacher Kayla Borton’s two-month-old twin boys, Case Michael, passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Now, Borton and other teachers are launching the Just in Case Foundation. Elementary School Dean of Students Heather Quinn told board members that the goal is to raise funds for things like CPR training and wearable oxygen monitors, along with raising awareness.

The school board agreed to let the organization hold a benefit next week. Superintendent Bill Bennett explained, “On June 11, we will have barbecue ribeye as well as hot dogs to raise money for the Just in Case Foundation, June 11. It’ll be in the track pavilion.”

Quinn says dine-in and drive-through options will be available from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Volunteers from the high school’s National Honor Society and FFA programs will help with the benefit.

School Board President Kyle Hinds offered the school corporation’s condolences to the Borton family and expressed hope “that they might find peace and healing in the days and months to come.”
