Pulaski County leaders had a chance to sharpen their community development skills earlier this month. The Indiana Communities Institute’s Community Development Course came to Pulaski County, as part of the Community Foundation of Pulaski County’s Forward Thinking Leadership Initiative.

Community Foundation Executive Director Wendy Rose said in a press release that the fact that 30 community members were willing to spend two-and-a-half days focusing on moving the county forward “is both important and exciting.” She said the course also helped illustrate how the community can change.

Sessions included foundational principles, readiness for change, community engagement, local economies, civic design, comprehensive community wealth, and integrated storytelling, along with a capstone exercise for actionable items.

One of the instructors was Penn State University professor and co-director of its Center for Economic and Community Development Dr. Ted Alter. He says Pulaski County has many impressive assets it can build on, including its natural resources, traditions, and economy.

Attendees included a number of elected and appointed government officials and leaders of nonprofit groups.
