Pulaski County to Save Thousands by Switching Health Insurance

Shopping around for health insurance will lead to some significant cost savings for Pulaski County. The county commissioners voted last week to switch its coverage from Cigna to Anthem with EPIC Insurance as the agent.

Commissioner Chuck Mellon said Cigna had planned to raise the cost by more than 19 percent, until the county started looking at other options. “In the bidding process, Cigna came back with a zero-percent increase, and we appreciate them for doing that,” Mellon said. “So just by taking the insurance out to bid, we saved $262,247.”

But in the end, Mellon said the Anthem plan is still expected to be about $173,000 less. “Both companies stated that they will work with us to try and drive the rates down, so please be assured that we will take them up on that offer,” he added.

A number of insurance-related documents are expected to be presented during the commissioners’ next meeting on Tuesday.
