Eastern Pulaski Schools were placed under a soft lockdown Friday, after a threatening message was reportedly sent to the school corporation, according to a notice school officials sent to families.
Winamac Police Chief Tyler Campbell says police were notified that a student who’d been suspended threatened to bring a gun to Winamac High School. He says the Winamac Police Department and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident with the full cooperation of the school corporation. Campbell says, “The student was detained and poses no threat to the student body.”
Campbell says the soft lockdown was put in place out of an abundance of caution, and students’ safety was never compromised. School officials reported that the lockdown had been lifted Friday afternoon, and they credited law enforcement for their swift action.
School officials stress that they “take any threatening language seriously and will act swiftly and to the furthest extent of the law.” Campbell added that threats to the school corporation “are of the highest priority to the Winamac Police Department.” School officials encourage parents to “use this as a teachable moment.”
Campbell thanked his officers, sheriff’s deputies, school officials, and everyone else “that assisted in this peaceful resolution.”
