Plans continue moving forward for the State Road 10 sidewalk project in North Judson. Both the town and the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation recently approved agreements letting INDOT acquire small portions of their property along the highway.
The town council initially had some concern that the acquisition would interfere with the Pioneer Cemetery fence replacement, but Town Superintendent Joe Leszek said the hundredth of an acre that INDOT needs is outside the fenced area. “They actually came out and staked it,” he told council members. “Where our current fence is, the old fence, that’s getting replaced with the new fence in the same location, it doesn’t affect it.”
Meanwhile, the school’s portion of the land totals about six-hundredths of an acre, according to Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin. “Really, out front here where the sign is and some curbs are, and so they are offering us $1,000 for each parcel,” Zupin told the school board. “That appears to be the going rate. I’m recommending that we accept the offer, both because INDOT will acquire it one way or another through eminent domain, and it is beneficial to our school and our community.”
Zupin says that project is currently scheduled to start next spring.
