The Starke County Park Board will consider the hiring of a park superintendent during a special meeting tonight. While the position was envisioned at the park board’s establishment in 2014, it was never actually filled, since the board didn’t get dedicated county funding until this year.
The need increased this past spring, when the park board took direct control of the Bass Lake Beach and Campground, and became even more urgent when the board fired the facility’s manager earlier this month.
The superintendent will oversee the Bass Lake Beach and Campground, Starke County Forest, and other properties under the county park board’s control. City and town park facilities aren’t the county’s responsibility, but the county superintendent could coordinate with those park departments on potential projects. The hope is that the new superintendent will eventually lead a paid staff of park employees and help with long-term planning.
The Starke County Park Board was scheduled to meet in a closed executive session Tuesday “To receive information about and interview prospective employees.” Tonight’s special park board meeting starts at 6:00 in Starke County Annex Building No. 1.
