N.J.-S.P. Turns to Online Spanish Classes due to Lack of Available Teachers

A shortage of Spanish teachers has North Judson-San Pierre Junior/Senior High School turning to online options. The school board last month approved an agreement with the Central Indiana Educational Service Center to use the Indiana Online program.

Principal Brian Orkis said he had zero applicants for the open teaching position over the summer, something experienced by many local schools. “I tried to piece some things together with some neighboring schools, maybe sharing staff or things like that, and it just wasn’t logistically possible,” he explained. “We weren’t able to work it out.”

Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said that left just one of the school’s five sections of Spanish classes with an actual teacher. Zupin and Orkis said they’d continue to try to find someone. In the meantime, it will cost the school corporation $200 per student to use Indiana Online.

Orkis told board members that aside from that one vacancy, he was pleased with the quality of the new teachers and aides.
