Oregon-Davis Elementary School is taking a coordinated approach to its reading curriculum. In a report to the school board last month, Teacher Elizabeth Megyese said that before the school began using the Into Reading program this year, it was pretty much up to individual teachers to set their reading curriculum. Now, she says the school will have some consistency throughout the grade levels, but will also have a curriculum that develops “analytical readers and independent thinkers.”
Students will not only read, but will also be given questions about what they read, similar to what they’ll see on state tests. Megyese said Into Reading also goes beyond basic reading skills, incorporating social-emotional learning into the curriculum, at times asking students to relate what they’ve read to their own experiences.
Superintendent Bill Bennett said the reading series is another tool to supplement the school corporation’s curriculum maps. “We’re excited, but it still doesn’t replace good teaching,” he said. “We have good teachers, so I’m excited that we have a good tool in their hands, hopefully.”
Students will have access to both online materials and a physical, write-in textbook.
