Starke County will see a slight increase in the cost of property and liability insurance. The county commissioners recently approved the insurance plan for the coming year.
Carrie Block with 1st Choice Insurance said the overall premium is going up by about $8,000. Some of that was due to losses, while some was due to increases in property values and the addition of new vehicles and equipment.
Block said Starke County may have been able to save money, at least initially, by switching workers’ compensation coverage to the Indiana Public Employers’ Plan, but she noted that the county wasn’t happy with their service the last time it had them. She said the lack of written procedures for safety and for obtaining certificates of insurance from outside contractors discouraged companies from submitting quotes.
But Block said the county has been seeing improvements with workers’ comp, and the training sessions that may seem boring and repetitive to employees have resulted in a decrease in injuries and insurance claims.
