Two housing developments have gotten zoning approval from the North Judson Town Council. Developer Kirt Verhagen told council members last week that the first phase would add duplexes to the southeast corner of State and George streets, facing the Town Park.

“We’re probably looking at 11 months to a year out, to actually get them ready for rental,” Verhagen said. “I’ve been told lately that it’s not so much a problem with pricing now, but it’s a problem getting product into the factory, to actually build the homes.”

The next phase would add two-story triplexes behind the duplexes.

The other development would come later. It would add five two-story units to the center of town, on the southwest corner of Central and Keller avenues. Verhagen said it will be designed to fit with the area’s existing character, matching the setbacks and complementing the brick of the current buildings.

“I would be more than happy to work with the town council, with the plan commission on final plans for the structures that go up at Keller and Central so it is a joint effort between our company and the town,” he said.

The site would also include space for a playground or community garden, as well as public art at the corner.

Council members’ only major concern was making sure the future apartments continue to be maintained over the coming years. “Because it’s by the church, it’s by the bank, it’s by the library . . . you just don’t want it to look rundown and rundown the area, right there,” said Council Member Matt Brewer.

Verhagen said the properties would be maintained by the owner, not individual tenants. The town council voted unanimously to rezone the two sites to multifamily residential.
