Winamac Town Council Considers Fee Adjustments, Adopts 2022 Budget

The Winamac Town Council continues to refine the town’s planned garbage collection fee. Under an ordinance presented during last week’s meeting, a five dollar monthly fee would be charged to every home and a $10 fee to every business.

Clerk-Treasurer Kendra Craft said it’s a change from the original plan, which was to charge five dollars per toter. Town officials noted that residential customers using a second toter pay the company directly. However, council members were open to the idea of waiving the fee for the handful of businesses that contract with a different company.

In any case, Council Member Judy Heater felt it was still a good deal. “If they look back and think of all of the years that we got free garbage pickup – free garbage pickup – that’s almost unheard of,” she said.

Meanwhile, council members did approve increases to several of the town’s existing fees and adopted the town’s 2022 budget. It adds up to more than $2 million, including a General Fund of over $969,000, a Motor Vehicle Highway Fund of $145,000, and a Park Fund of over $144,000. The budget now goes to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance for final approval.
