Nearly one in six Americans received food assistance from the charitable sector last year. This year, Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Suzanne Crouch announced the state will give a reported $1 million to 11 Hoosier food banks throughout the state making it an increase from the previous year.
Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) Director Bruce Kettler is hopeful this increased funding will go a long way in supporting the chosen food banks. The funding was provided by the Indiana Legislature from the biennial budget. The distribution amounts were determined using The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TFAP) fair share percentages for Indiana. The program captures poverty and unemployment levels in each county to determine the amount given.
Locally, the Food Bank of Northern Indiana received $115,000, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana received $97,700 and Food Finders Food Bank, Inc. received $93,900.
