Knox Board of Public Works Holds Hearing on Code Enforcement on Fire Damaged Building Downtown

The Knox Board of Public Works held a public hearing Wednesday morning for the code enforcement at 18 S. Main Street.  A fire occurred at the building on June 30.

The Director of Building, Planning and Code Compliance Kenny Pfost said the building was a total loss. Pfost said he sent a code enforcement and letters in order to demolish the building due to it being a hazard during a previous meeting.

He said the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s Fire and Investigative Division was called upon to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Pfost added they have learned there is a discrepancy with insurance and that no insurance company has claimed the building that caught on fire. This has held up the fire investigation from occurring sooner.

He asked the board to modify his order from July 22 to include that the occupant sign another consent form to allow access to continue the fire investigation and the structural engineer to go in and determine how extensive the damage is.

He also added he would like a structural engineer’s report on their findings submitted by September 28 for the next Board of Works meeting.

A motion was made to confirm the code enforcement order and to modify the order to allow the city to get on the property to inspect and determine the cause and origin of the fire as per Kenny Pfost’s recommendation.
