The Oregon-Davis School Board heard from Industrial Technology teacher Joe Veger at their meeting Monday, August 22.
Veger, a teacher for close to 40 years, spoke on the SkillsUSA chapter he started at Oregon-Davis. Last year was the first year with SkillsUSA at the corporation.
He added that Oregon-Davis is the only middle school in the state of Indiana that offers it.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. A nonprofit national education association, SkillsUSA serves middle school, high school, college and postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.
Veger mentioned that the school received a grant from the Tech Point Foundation for Youth. While the school has first generation robotics, Tech Point is sending them two second generation robot kits.
A competition is scheduled for October 29. Veger announced that if one of the students wins they get to go to the state competition in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium.
He told board members that SkillsUSA gives students opportunities to compete in national competitions and earn scholarships. If a student were to win at state, they too would be invited to a national competition.
Rieth-Riley is also getting involved with students in the SkillsUSA program. Veger said that internships with Rieth-Riley are available for these students right after graduation for them to get a job right away.
