Oregon-Davis Responds to School Safety Concerns

School safety was a big topic of discussion yesterday at the Oregon-Davis School Corporation.

Families and students of Oregon-Davis were at the school Thursday, September 21 to express concerns over the school’s safety procedures.

Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Bill Bennett offered a statement to WKVI News.

Bennett commented, “Yesterday we were made aware of some social media posts about students who were concerned about some safety issues at school and wanted to hold a walk-out for school safety. What we have done today is teachers have prepared a statement for the entire student body and at nine o’clock today we allowed students to come down to the gym and have their concerns heard. I have teachers, principals, a school resource officer and counselors talking with the students, hearing their concerns so we make sure their voice is heard. We have had an incident in the past that triggered this and unfortunately due to confidentiality of student’s rights, we cannot share what discipline actions have been taken. There was some concern and feelings that maybe we didn’t do anything but unfortunately we cannot disclose that information.”

When asked what the school is doing other than actions taken Thursday to make sure that these types of incidents do not happen again, Bennett stated that communication is important.

“We encourage the students to say something if they see something and sometimes students don’t feel comfortable so they may tell mom and dad at home and that’s perfectly fine. All they have to do is let us know. We do have online reporting forms if they want to keep it anonymous but all they need to do is call one of our offices and we will get back to them and at least make sure their voices are heard.”

A recent incident is under investigation.
