The Starke County Commissioners heard from Kris Krouse of the Shirley Heinze Land Trust during their Tuesday night meeting.
The Shirley Heinze Land Trust works to preserve and restore natural lands and waters in Northwestern Indiana.
Krouse stated that in 2012 they found out that Starke County did not have a land trust organization working in the county to help with its conservation. He added one of the opportunities that came up in Starke County was to preserve some land within a few miles outside of North Judson.
He added the land the organization is referring to is owned privately with several hundred acres, making it the home to over 1,000 different species.
Krouse said the Shirley Heinze Land Trust developed a next level conservation trust grant application in partnership with the owners of the land to help conserve the area. He asked the commissioners for support to move forward with the preservation if awarded the grant. The motion was made and passed in support of the Shirley Heinze Land Trust preserving land in Starke County.
