The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, SS Cyril and Methodius Conference, a non profit organization is celebrating 25 years of serving families in need within the North Judson-San Pierre area.
A storage unit on Talmer Avenue is where donated items such as sofas, appliances, dishes, bedding mattresses, springs, sheets and blankets are available for families in need.
Families are not charged for these items. However, on occasion, rummage sales are held to reduce the amount of inventory to make room for future donations. These funds raised go directly to help families financially.
Close to 30 families are helped during the holiday season. In addition to the above, five non-food items are given to families on food stamps, Medicaid or the energy assistance program. The distribution is held the last Saturday of the month at the storage site on Talmer Avenue. Items include laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, toweling, deodorant, shaving items, shampoo, toothpaste and brushes.
Funding is provided by donations, estate planning, church members and the annual pork chop dinner.
