Knox City Council Hears Update from Surf Broadband Solutions

The Knox City Council heard an update from Surf Broadband Solutions during their meeting Tuesday.

In May of 2021, the city council agreed to let Surf take a survey to see how many residents would be interested and what they’d be able to pay. Surf President Gene Crusie told council members that the company would partner with Kankakee Valley REMC to use some of its fiber. Fiber would then have to be installed through every street to reach homes and businesses. The installation would come at no cost to the city, but Surf would ask for a streamlined permitting process to access the right of way.

During Tuesday’s meeting, representatives from Surf said they are planning to start construction mid-June and take six months to complete the project. They added, customers could generally expect to pay $35 a month for 50 megabits, $55 a month for 100 megabits, $70 a month for 500 megabits and $85 for 1 gigabit.

It was noted Surf will start to provide service as soon as August to the first 400 homes and as time goes on. They hope by December the project will be complete. Surf announced they will offer a price lock guarantee to those who are interested in signing up. If you sign up with Surf, your price is guaranteed for life as long as you don’t switch plans.
