The Starke County Council discussed additional appropriations for the 2024 budget during their meeting last week.
Starke County Auditor Rachel Oesterreich informed council members the county had a high number of workman’s compensation claims over the past three years. She stated due to this increase the county’s liability renewal came in $100,000 more than expected.
Oesterreich went on to say since they are past the 2024 budget, she formally asked the council to make an additional appropriation of $100,000 to cover the increased liability renewal for 2023-2024. She added it is up for renewal in September and having the additional appropriation approved would cover that unexpected expense.
The council made a motion to approve the additional appropriation. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously by vote. It was noted the additional appropriation will come from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) fund.
