The Starke County Council discussed the Save the Hospital fund during their last meeting.
Starke County Community Foundation Director of Development Jacque Ryan along with Hospital Community Board member Kathy Norem brought forth a recommendation to use the fund by investing in the Northern Indiana Community Foundation for community wide grants and scholarships relating to the healthcare of local residents.
Director of Development Jacque Ryan explained to the council how the Community Foundation would fulfill this mission. She presented each council member with information on what the foundation has done for the local community involving grants and scholarships. It was mentioned a local committee would be established to review grant applications and select recommendations for grants awarded.
It was announced the Save the Hospital fund is currently invested in an 11 month CD collecting 5% annually and is in the amount of $6,000,000. The council was hesitant to move forward on the recommendation. It was noted the council would like to take the matter under advisement.
Starke County Auditor Rachel Oesterreich told WKVI news the council is potentially looking at approving a partial donation to the endowment fund and that may come before the council at an upcoming meeting.
