The Starke County Commissioners met in special session with citizens of Starke County to discuss the current solar ordinance Wednesday night.
In a previous story, the commissioners were approached by Citizens Against Progressive Solar (C.A.P.S.) in hopes amendments would be made to the current solar ordinance. In that September meeting the commissioners suggested holding a joint session with the planning commission. Since that time, it was decided the commissioners would meet in special session to hear the proposed amendments and hear from the public.
During their meeting Wednesday, the commissioners opened the floor to the public for comments where they heard from C.A.P.S. and land owners. Each individual that spoke was given the same amount of time to voice their comments and concerns. It was noted by several individuals that C.A.P.S. is not against solar but believes the commissioners need to look into the long-term effects of solar on land in terms of wildlife and conservation. They believe there was more in the ordinance that could be done in making sure Starke County land is protected.
It was mentioned by several land owners they have followed the current ordinance passed by the commissioners and have done everything that has been asked of them in following the guidelines. It was also mentioned by landowners they believe in helping Starke County become a more profitable entity by diversifying their privately-owned land and help move the county forward.
After hearing everyone’s comments, Commissioner Mark Gourley stated he believes in protecting the rights of Starke County citizens. He added he is not in favor of amending the current ordinance and believes that landowners have the right to move forward with using their privately-owned land for solar. Commissioner Don Binkley stated he has done the proper research and believes the current ordinance that is in place protects Starke County land and its landowners. He stated he would not be in favor of any amendments to the ordinance.
Commission President Charles Chesak commented he is sitting neutral on the issue. He stated with two commissioners already opposed to amending the ordinance there is nothing more that can be done and the matter was closed.
