The Starke County Council discussed amending spending limits for the Highway Department during their meeting Monday.
In a previous meeting, the council approved a motion to have the highway department request anything above $10,000 to the council for approval in efforts to not go over budget. Since that time, the Starke County Commissioners approved the resignation of the former Highway Superintendent and appointed Starke County Auditor Rachel Oesterreich to fill the position as Interim Highway Superintendent.
During the council meeting on Monday, it was brought to their attention there are some expenditures the Starke County Highway Department needs to be able to make in order to operate properly. It was noted, fuel, aggregates and salt are a major expense the highway department needs especially this time of year and that waiting for council’s approval stalls the department from moving forward.
A motion was made to remove the expense limit on fuel, amend the expense limit of aggregates and salt to $25,000 and keep the remaining expense limit for emergency use at $10,000. That motion was seconded and passed unanimously by vote.
