The Knox City Council discussed their trash removal contract during their meeting last week.
City of Knox Mayor Dennis Estok announced the city’s contract with Republic Services comes to an end on July 31. He stated an extension has been offered by Republic Services that would increase the current amount $1.34 per month for the first year, $0.67 per month for the second year and $0.69 per month for the third year. He stated that would be a total of a $2.70 increase for the three years.
Estok announced the city saved $267,530 by going with Republic Services contract during the previous trash removal renewal. He stated the city previously used Waste Management and if the council had approved their contract instead of Republic Services, they would have had a monthly trash removal price of $21.45 this year. He added the city is currently being charged $15.40 per month and by year three if this extention with Republic Services is approved, the city would be paying $18.01 per month in year three.
Estok stated the contract will be up for approval at either the next council meeting or the following meeting. He added the council will need to decide on if they are going to approve an extension with Republic Services or bid out a new trash removal service to give ample time before July 31.
