The Knox City Council discussed extending the deadline for the 50/50 sidewalk replacement program during their meeting last week.
City of Knox Mayor Dennis Estok told WKVI News the city has only received two interested applicants for the residential and business sidewalk replacement program. He added the council approved to extend the deadline to Friday, May 24 in hopes more applications are received.
In a press release, the City of Knox stated it will pay 50 percent of the cost of material and labor for sidewalk replacement, subject to several conditions. The Mayor’s Office will receive requests for residential or business sidewalk replacements until all available funds are used on a first-come, first-served basis and until monies to support this program run out. Secondly, the street superintendent will measure and inspect the request and approve or disapprove the work order. After the bid is awarded to the contractor, the property owner will be notified of the cost and must pay 50 percent to the city before construction begins.
The property owner’s share must be paid within 14 days of notification in order for the project to continue. If payment is not received within the 14 days, the project will be placed on the bottom of the work schedule. Upon completion of work, the street superintendent will make a final inspection and approve payment to the contractor doing the work.
Applications must be dated and received by the new deadline of Friday, May 24 at 4 p.m. CT. If anyone is interested, they are encouraged to apply at the Mayor’s office in Knox at 101 West Washington Street.
