The Starke County Commissioners discussed previously opened bids for the Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) project during their meeting Monday.
In a previous story, Starke County Highway Interim Superintendent Rachel Oesterreich announced the county had been approved by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) for the 2024-01 CCMG project. She added they had been granted the full $1.5 million for the project that will consist of a hot mix asphalt inlay on 600 North, in certain areas from 600 East to State Road 23, 400 North from U.S. 35 to Range Road and the new road within Deer View Estates Subdivision.
As previously reported, the county applied for the CCMG through INDOT this past January. The grant is an 80/20 match with the county needing to put forth $500,000 from the MVH Restricted Fund. The total cost of the project is around $2 million with the $1.5 million coming from the grant.
During the commissioners meeting last month, the first bid received came from Rieth Riley in the amount of $923,627.15. The second bid received came from Milestone Contractors out of South Bend in the amount of $899,900. It was announced those were the only two bids received. Starke County Auditor Rachel Oesterreich asked the commissioners to have the bids thoroughly checked by Starke County Attorney Justin Schramm to make sure everything was in order.
During their meeting Monday, a motion was made to approve the lower bid from Milestone Contractors out of South Bend in the amount of $899,900. That motion was seconded and passed unanimously by vote. Oesterreich told WKVI News the work will now be completed this summer.
