Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb made a stop in Culver Tuesday to applaud the achievements of Culver Elementary’s fourth-grade class in the “You and Me Vape Free” campaign. Indiana State Health Commissioner Lindsay Weaver joined Holcomb for the event.
Weaver praised the Culver students and all of Marshall County, saying that the area has the seventh-best rate for non-smoking in the United States. Holcomb praised the Culver students as “trailblazers, leading the way” for the non-smoking, non-vaping campaign of the state.
“This is a proud day because what we had hoped for and anticipated, Culver Elementary and the Marshall County Health Department have proven today that with resources they can make a positive difference,” said Holcomb. “Not just today but for the days to come. If there is a silver lining that came out of COVID, it proved that if we really wanted to change the trajectory of our health rankings we had to invest in combating the causes that took us to those low rankings.”
As part of Culver’s campaign, the students participated in a t-shirt design contest. Holcomb announced the winner at the assembly as fourth grader Kynedi Ogle took the prize. Every fourth-grade student, and Holcomb himself, was given a free t-shirt with Kynedi’s winning design.
“To have a fourth-grade class champion being vape-free, there’s nothing cooler than that,” said Holcomb. “We just wanted to shine the light on all the good things that are happening in Culver and around the state.”
