Hunters who might be looking to make a difference this season, good news: The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, has an easy way for you to give back, called Hunt for Hunger.
Through this program, hunters can donate their harvested deer to help feed families in need across Indiana. The program is an easy way to turn a trip to the woods into hundreds of meals for those in Indiana who could use an extra helping hand.
Here is how the program works: After your hunt, take your field-dressed deer to one of the participating processors across Indiana. The list can be found on the DNR website, here.
After the deer is taken to a participating processor, it is turned into healthy venison burgers which then get distributed to area food banks, soup kitchens, and food pantries.
There is no cost to participate in this program; processing fees are covered by the Hunt for Hunger program. Hunt for Hunger began in 2008, and since then hunters have donated over 5,000 pounds of venison to in-need Hoosier families across the state.
Indiana DNR states that a single deer can provide up to two hundred meals for a family in need.
