Starke County Planning Commission announces date of public hearing in regards to data centers

According to an announcement from the Starke County Planning Commission Administrator, the Starke County Planning Commission has announced a date for a public hearing in regards to a proposed moratorium on hyperscale data center developments. The announcement reads as follows:

Notice is hereby given that the Starke County Planning Commission will hold a Public
Hearing on the following proposal:

The Planning Commission will consider a temporary twelve (12) month moratorium on the
acceptance, processing, or approval of any building permits, improvement location permits, or
site plan applications for Hyperscale Data Center Projects within the unincorporated areas of
Starke County, Indiana.

For purposes of this moratorium, a “Hyperscale Data Center Project” shall mean any structure
or complex of structures exceeding 5,000 square feet in total floor area, designed or intended
primarily for housing data processing equipment, servers, or related cooling, energy, or
communications infrastructure.

The purpose of the proposed moratorium is to allow the County sufficient time to evaluate and
adopt zoning regulations addressing such uses, including but not limited to infrastructure
capacity, environmental impacts, and public safety considerations.

Public Participation
All interested persons are invited to attend and be heard. Written comments may also be
submitted to the Starke County Planning Commission prior to the hearing at the address listed
above or by email to plancomm75@starke.in.gov.

All comments received will be made part of the official record.

Following the hearing, the Planning Commission will forward a recommendation to the Starke
County Board of Commissioners for final consideration and possible adoption.
