The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is reminding Hoosiers about the importance of fireplace safety over the colder winter months.
They shared in an announcement this week that fireplaces bring warmth, but also come with risks. Department of Homeland Security urges fireplace users to use a screen to prevent sparks. Additionally, chimneys should be cleaned annually.
Over the holiday season, those with fireplaces should avoid burning wrapping paper, which can create dangerous sparks.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security recommends using only dry, seasoned firewood in fireplaces; and to ensure gas fireplaces have proper ventilation and a working carbon monoxide detector nearby. A fire extinguisher, smoke alarms, and a safety plan should also be readily available.
