Knox-Center Township Fire Department shares winter fire safety tips

Knox-Center Township Fire Department recently shared that their website provides multiple, valuable winter fire safety tips.

The website is knoxcenterfire.org, and under the Resources menu are all of the Fire Department’s safety tips, including smoke alarm safety, home fire sprinklers, home fire escape planning, and more.

On the Winter Fire Safety Tips page, visitors can read facts about space heaters and home heating fires, as well as watch instructional videos with important information.

According to the website, heating is the second leading cause of home fires in the United States; with December, January, and February being the peak months for heating fires.

The website states that two of every five home heating hires, or 40%, are started by space heaters.

It is recommended to keep anything flammable at least 3 feet away from home heating elements, and to never use an oven to heat your home. Ensure you are using the correct type of fuel for your space heaters, and check smoke alarms at least once a month. Never leave portable heaters on overnight or when you are not home, and make sure your fire place has a sturdy screen to help stop sparks from flying into the room.
