Indiana’s Attorney General, Todd Rokita, is warning Hoosiers about scam calls and how to protect themselves.
There are several ways to help prevent yourself from being scammed, including:
- Not answering calls from numbers you don’t recognize.
- If you do answer a call and don’t recognize the caller, do not engage with them. Instead, hang up immediately. Do not press buttons or speak to the person on the other end, as it could confirm to a scammer that your phone number is active, leading to more calls.
- Register your number on the Do Not Call List, which can be found at DoNotCall.gov. Telemarketers are not allowed to send solicitations through texts or phone calls to numbers on the list.
- Contact your phone service provider to ask if they offer any type of advanced call-filtering or blocking services, which can help stop many robocalls and texts before they even reach your phone.
- Pay attention to active scams that are reported in your area and common scam tactics, such as false calls from government agencies, or requests for payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency.
Complaints about robocalls or violators of the Do Not Call List can be made to the Indiana Attorney General’s office at 1-888-834-9969.
