Indiana bill proposes township reorganization that could impact 200 townships across the state

An Indiana bill that has passed the House and now moves to the Senate could change the way townships are reorganized in areas with smaller populations.

House Bill 1315 proposes the reorganization and consolidation of townships that meet certain criteria.

The bill proposes that townships be consolidated if they:

  • Serve fewer than 6,700 residents
  • Do not operate a township fire department
  • Total annual employee salaries are more than twice the amount of public assistance they distribute.

Of the estimated 1,000 townships in Indiana, this bill is expected to impact approximately 200 of them.
