Indiana Attorney General provides tips for hiring contractors in wake of storm damage

In the wake of March 10th’s tornado and severe storms, the Indiana Attorney General has released tips for home and property owners who may be working with contractors for repairs.

The tips are to help prevent citizens from potentially being scammed.

When it comes to finding a contractor for work on property damage, take your time and don’t let a contractor rush your decision. Do research and know beforehand what your budget range is and what you’d like done. If you have doubts, you can contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division and the Better Business Bureau to find out any complaint information on contractors you are considering.

Skepticism should be applied if a contractor finds immediate problems without any inspection, doesn’t disclose their charges before trying to ask you to sign a contract, if they offer a one-day-only deal, or if they pressure you to accept an offer.

The best practices include comparing bids and services, getting bids in writing, and checking if the contractor is licensed, bonded and insured.

As a note, Indiana law requires home improvement contracts to be in writing for projects exceeding $150. Before signing a contract, make sure it includes:

  • The price of the job
  • A payment schedule
  • Detailed description of the work and materials
  • Estimated start and completion dates
  • The contractor’s name and address
  • A name and phone number of someone to contact if problems arise
  • And the contractor’s signature.

Other tips include not paying for an entire project before work begins, finding out if a permit is needed for the repairs or improvements, and getting a copy of any applicable warranties. Keep records related to your project and of any complaints you may make.
