
A man accused of hitting two mini school buses with a box truck last May has entered a plea deal.
The accident happened on May 8th, 2025 and involved the New Prairie JV baseball team, who was traveling to a game. The incident occurred at the intersection of US Highway 20 and Fail Road and involved a total of 4 vehicles; a commercial motor vehicle, the 2 New Prairie school buses, and a single axle box truck.
Shawn Akison, who was driving the box truck, collided with both the commercial vehicle and two buses, resulting in 9 injuries being reported including 7 students; one of whom was airlifted from the scene and later released from the hospital.
Akison was later found to have fentanyl in his system at the time of the crash.
According to court records, Akison has pleaded guilty to causing catastrophic injury while operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The court is taking Akison’s plea under advisement; sentencing is scheduled to take place April 29th.
