Tax Scammers Now Targeting Students
The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers about another phone scam, this one targeting students. A caller claiming to be from the IRS demands payment for a “Federal Student Tax,” threatening to report students to the police if they don’t wire money immediately. Woman Struck by Vehicle in Medaryville Parking Lot
Police are investigating after a woman was injured when she was struck by a vehicle in a Medaryville parking lot. Officials with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office say it happened shortly before noon Friday at the Medaryville Dollar General store. The victim had to be airlifted as a result of her injuries. AAA Predicts Increase in Memorial Day Travel
More than 820,000 Hoosiers are expected to travel over the Memorial Day weekend, according to projections from the AAA Hoosier Motor Club. That’s an increase of more than 16,000 from last year. AAA says just over 747,000 of them will drive, while nearly 41,000 will fly. Continue reading

Red Cross Hopes to Boost Summer Blood Donations
The American Red Cross is working to make sure it has a sufficient number of blood donations over the summer months. In a press release, the Red Cross says that summer vacations and activities often mean regular donors are too busy to give blood. They say that during June, July, and August, each Red Cross blood drive is about two donors short of what’s needed to meet patients’ needs. Continue reading
Unemployment Rates Down from Last Month, Up from Last Year
April unemployment rates were lower in Starke and Pulaski counties than the previous month, but higher compared to the same period a year ago. According to data released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Starke County had an unemployment rate of six percent in April, while Pulaski County’s was 5.1 percent. Continue reading
