The Town of North Judson is finalizing plans for the sale of its short-line railroad. Last month, the town’s redevelopment commission voted to sell the 33-mile railroad corridor to Midwest & Bluegrass Rail for $2,725,000. The deal cleared another procedural hurdle last week, when the commission passed a resolution confirming the corridor’s economic development area, which was initially created last summer.

The Pulaski County Council finalized over a million dollars in additional appropriations Monday, but not without a debate on funding for COVID-19 response. The county’s Incident Management Team asked for almost $48,000, the amount that was left unspent from last year’s $100,000 additional appropriation. But with only about $2,400 actually being spent on PPE last year, Council Member Rudy DeSabatine wasn’t comfortable approving the entire request at once.

The water and wastewater departments ask customers to let the water run in a stream the size of a toothpick from a faucet inside their home or business. In a year when COVID-19 has disrupted much of everyday life, local volunteers have used their creativity to keep helping those in need. The Kid’s Closet Ministry provides school supplies, clothing, and other resources to about Starke County 1,200 children a year. Director Linda Lewandowski says that volunteers can no longer deliver clothes directly to homes, but they found a solution that turned out to be more efficient.

Drivers on U.S. 35 in LaPorte County Saturday afternoon found themselves sharing the highway with a herd of cattle. The Holstein calves took off from their home near U.S. 35 and County Road 500 South, according to a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post. An off-duty deputy reportedly spotted the herd running southbound in the northbound lanes. When the calves got to U.S. 6, they continued eastbound.

A crash in Rochester sent five people to the hospital Friday evening. Indiana State Police say it happened just after 6:00 at U.S. 31 and Sweetgum Road. Troopers believe John Hogan, 43, of rural Macy, Indiana, was driving a Toyota Corolla southwest on Sweetgum Road and pulled into the path of a northbound Nissan Sentra driven by Angela Collins, 49, of Indianapolis.

Opioid overdose reversal medication will soon be available 24 hours a day in every Indiana county. Governor Holcomb announced Friday that the state is partnering with Overdose Lifeline to buy 215 “NaloxBox” units. It’s is a hard acrylic box containing six to eight doses of naloxone that can be mounted on the outside of a building. Each county will get at least one.
