The North Judson-San Pierre School Board is moving ahead with the budget process. Board members voted last week to submit the 2021 budget proposal to the Starke County Council. It calls for a total budget of more than $13 million, with an Education Fund of just over $6.9 million and an Operations Fund of over $3.9 million.

Efforts to extend the Erie Trail toward Hebron could get a boost, if North Judson were to donate part of its short line railroad to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. That’s according to representatives from the Prairie Trails Club. Steve and Kathy Lucas voiced the group’s support for the proposal during Monday’s town council meeting.

The Yellowstone Trail Festival will get to keep the $1,000 it received from the Town of Hamlet, in spite of the event’s cancellation. Town officials held off on handing over this year’s donation until July, to make sure the festival was still happening. But about two weeks later, the event was canceled.

The Pulaski County Commissioners have voted to prohibit deadly weapons in county facilities. An ordinance to that effect was approved during a special commissioners meeting Thursday, according to Board President Kenny Becker.

While next month’s Fall Bash has been canceled, the City of Knox is already busy rescheduling many of the festivities for next July. Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council last week that the city didn’t really have an option. “There’s no way we could meet any of the conditions set forth to have a gathering over 250 down there, so we just went ahead and canceled it,” he explained.

Four business proposals will be competing for $10,000 in next month’s North Judson Business Pitch Competition. It’s designed to provide funding to startup businesses less than three years old, as well as companies looking to expand. Competitors will pitch their plans to a panel of judges in a public event on Saturday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. at North Judson Town Hall.

Marshall County has had another six residents test positive, bringing the total to 827, according to Thursday’s report from the Indiana State Department of Health. Pulaski County added two cases for a total of 90, while Starke County’s case count increased by one to 185.

An Iowa man is accused of dealing cocaine and marijuana, following a LaPorte County traffic stop Tuesday. Sheriff’s deputies say they pulled over a vehicle driven by Marques J. Wright, 27, of Langworthy, Iowa on the Indiana Toll Road, after he allegedly committed a traffic infraction while changing lanes and then followed another westbound vehicle too closely.

Pulaski County’s proposed solar farm may have a role to play in Winamac’s revitalization efforts. Town Attorney Justin Schramm says the town had been looking to tear down an abandoned grain elevator near the intersection of Logan and Jefferson streets and possibly redevelop the site as a park facility to tie into the adjacent Panhandle Pathway.

North Judson-San Pierre’s school year is off to a good start, according to Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin. “We started school. We’re almost a week into it, and the staff and the students have been wonderful,” Zupin told the school board Tuesday. “They’ve been great. The students have been very cooperative with the masks. The teachers have been flexible and accommodating.”

Oregon-Davis students’ next summer vacation will start a little later than originally planned. The school board officially adjusted the 2020-2021 school calendar Monday, to move the last day of school from May 20 to May 26, according to Superintendent Bill Bennett.
