Judge Denies Augusta Hadden’s Bond Reduction Request
The woman charged in connection with last month’s murder of a Knox man will remain in jail for at least another week. Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall denied a request by Augusta Hadden’s attorney to reduce her bond from $200,000 surety. Continue reading
Open House Showcases Starke County Building Renovations
Visitors to the Starke County Courthouse will notice some major changes thanks to recent building renovations. Public access is now limited to the west entrance, which faces the Knox Moose Lodge. It is fully handicap accessible. All visitors will be greeted by a uniformed security officer and asked to pass through a metal detector. Starke Commissioners Reject Communications Invoice, Suggest Committee to Address Radio Woes
The Starke County Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to reject an invoice for repairs to the county’s radio system. They agreed vendor J&K Communications did not adequately fix the system as promised and contend they used existing equipment without authorization. J&K has since told the commissioners they need to spend an additional $4,000 on a new VHF antenna to ensure adequate county-wide coverage. Continue reading
Property Tax Payments Due May 10th, Bills in the Mail
Starke County property tax bills are in the mail. Treasurer Kasey Clark says changes at the state level pushed the mailing date back to April 19th. Education Director Dawn Wallen says regardless of which school you choose, structured learning is essential to development. She says 85 percent of brain development occurs between birth and age 5. Starke County officials are still refining a proposed truck route ordinance before scheduling a public hearing on the measure.
