This is the first day for prospective General Election voters to cast absentee ballots. Pulaski Council Agrees to Fund Courthouse Restroom Repairs
The Pulaski County Council has agreed to begin essential updates to the courthouse in an effort to comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. Maintenance supervisor Jeff Johnston says at a minimum the entry doors to the restrooms in the basement need to be widened and wheelchair accessible stalls need to be added. Those are among the numerous, costly repairs the courthouse will require to address both ADA and structural issues. Continue reading
Local Officials Raise Starke County Flag
Starke County’s new flag is now flying proudly over the courthouse. It was unveiled during Friday’s bicentennial torch relay celebration and officially raised for the first time Monday morning. Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall presided over the brief ceremony after accepting the flag from Melba and Brad Shilling. Her late husband, Jim, was a well-known historian, community activist and a past winner of the Henry F. Schricker Award. It’s presented annually to a resident who embodies the former governor’s credo of “service before self.” Continue reading

Starke County Highway Department Stocks Up for Winter
The Starke County Highway Department is getting ready for winter weather. Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the county commissioners last week they’ve committed to 1,250 tons of salt at $56.16 per ton. He says that represents a savings of between $8 and $9,000 over last year. Continue reading
Starke County Flag Unveiled During Bicentennial Celebration
Starke County’s new flag will be raised for the first time today. It was unveiled during Friday evening’s bicentennial torch relay celebration. Melba Shilling and her late husband, Jim, were inspired by a visit a few years ago to Starke County’s “sister courthouse” in Ottawa County, Ohio. Shilling says the county had its own flag flying. Starke County Welcomes Indiana Bicentennial Torch
Starke County rolled out the red carpet to welcome the Indiana Bicentennial Torch last evening. It visited Bass Lake, North Judson, Toto and Knox on its journey. Along the way it was carried by 20 notable community members on everything from a steam train to an antique fire truck to a bicycle before being placed in the Knox Volunteer Fire Department’s rescue boat for its final stop at Wythogan Park. Starke County Accepts Ownership of San Pierre Building
Starke County will soon be able to proceed with the demolition of a dilapidated building. The commissioners Monday evening agreed to accept the transfer of title to the former Bank of San Pierre at the northwest corner of Broadway and Eliza Streets. It has been vacant for several years, and the county has installed barriers around the structure due to crumbling brick. Continue reading
