Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ to Honor Dr. Otis R. Bowen and Donors

poor handmaidsJoin the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Foundation for a special ceremony today commemorating the Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Fund. Officials will unveil a plaque honoring his generous gifts to the Poor Handmaids and their ministries at The Center at Donaldson. Doc Bowen resided at the Catherine Kasper Life Center until his death in May of 2013.

The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Foundation created the Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Fund to commemorate Dr. Bowen’s outstanding years of public service and his service to the Poor Handmaids and the ministries at The Center at Donaldson. Dr. Bowen also served as honorary chairman of the foundation’s campaign to build assisted living and a college residence hall. Continue reading

Police Force Addition Gives North Judson Some Teeth

The North Judson Police Department is adding another officer, only this one works on four legs.

It was announced Friday that a K-9 unit will be joining the North Judson Police force. This is the first K-9 that will work for the department. The 6-year-old Dutch Shepherd name Gunner has completed years of training with a certified American K-9 Association outlet.

Through their Adopt-a-Hunter program, the Eric Corey Foundation allows those with physical challenges to get away from the recurring doctor’s visits that many live with on a daily basis. The foundation was started after the late 15-year-old, who was an avid hunter, was diagnosed with ALS.

North Judson-San Pierre Schools are hoping a film can start a conversation on the future of their school services.

For three days in February, the school corporation will be showing the film “Rise Above the Mark.” The documentary attempts to explain some of the challenges faced in classrooms in the United States.

Starke County Commissioners Accept 4-Way Stop Recommendations

4-way_stop_signThe Starke County Commissioners have authorized the addition of a four-way stop at a county intersection based on traffic surveys conducted by Purdue University. Signs will be added at the intersection of 350 East and 250 North due to the lack of sight distance that cannot be remedied by trimming trees and other growth. The report indicates one accident has occurred there and numerous complaints have been lodged. Continue reading

Economy Auto Donates to Starke County Food Pantry

Economy-Auto-Food-DriveA successful Starke County business owner gives back to the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry. Economy Auto in Knox collected food and donations from customers during the month of January. Owner George Mammarella recently presented Community Services of Starke County Executive Director Joan Haugh a check for $1,000 from the business along with $68 from a donation can at the business and several totes of food given by customers. Haugh says cash and nonperishable food donations to the Starke County Food Pantry are always welcome.

Hoosiers are historically lucky when it comes to the multi-state game. Of the 44 jurisdictions that sell Powerball tickets, Indiana has sold more winners than any other with 38. Other non-jackpot prizes of up to $2 million are also available.

Kankakee Valley Broadcasting Celebrates MAX 98.3 FM Launch

Billboard 2Join the staff of Kankakee Valley Broadcasting for today’s ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch of WYMR-FM, MAX 98.3. The 6,000 watt radio station is licensed in Culver and Plymouth and is a sister station to K99.3 WKVI FM and Kountry KVI 1520 AM, both of which are licensed in Knox. The stations share an air staff and news department and play a similar mix of hit music from the 1970s through present day. Continue reading

Starke County Highway Department Wins National Award

 The Starke County Highway Department is the recipient of a National Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award from the Salt Institute. They were honored for excellence in environmental consciousness and effective management in the storage of winter road salt. The county is one of 12 facilities in the United States and Canada to receive the honor this year and the first county in the nation to win the award since it was established in 2012. Starke County is also Indiana’s first non-INDOT honoree. Continue reading
