Judges to Visit Students on Constitution Day

 Trial and appellate judges will be talking to students about the U.S. Constitution on Wednesday, Sept. 17 in recognition of the anniversary of the signing of the document.

The judges will be passing out pocket constitutions for the students to keep. Judges will also discuss how the jury process works and why it is such an important component of citizenship. The project may include a public service announcement about jury duty, a discussion about statistics on state and county jury trials and a mock jury selection.

Ancilla Offers Two Year Online Degree

  
 

A new program at Ancilla College allows students to earn a degree without setting foot on campus. Behavioral science is the first two year degree offered online by Ancilla. They have had course offerings over the Internet before but have never offered a full degree solely online. The Davis Township Building Corporation will meet this evening in Hamlet to consider the next steps with regard to building a new fire station and community center there. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. CDT at the current fire station on Pearl Street. The advance agenda shared with WKVI News indicates members will consider the process for approval to issue bonds for the project. Donnelly and Walorski Thank Veterans for Their Service

 
 

U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly and U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski paid a visit to Starke County over the weekend. Both took part in Saturday’s veterans program organized by the Blue Star Mothers. After a parade down Main Street, both spoke in front of the veterans monument at the Starke County Courthouse. Donnelly said the sacrifices of those who have served in our nation’s armed forces ensure we can live our lives in safety and in freedom. Continue reading

Enterovirus Cases Confirmed in Indiana

 
 

Four Lake County children have been diagnosed with enterovirus D68. The cases were confirmed by state health officials on Friday.

The Indiana State Department of Health is working with local health departments and hospitals to detect others with the illness.

State health officials have already reported a higher than expected level of respiratory illnesess statewide for this time of year.

Fill the Food Pantries During Hunger Action Month

September is hunger action month. It’s a time to help fellow community members who are hungry.

One in five children go hungry everyday and more older adults are utilizing food pantries for their needs. Volunteers at area food pantries are doing what they can to assist families in times of need and the best way you can help is to donate.

Both food pantries in Starke County and in Pulaski County are in need of canned soups, canned fruits and vegetables, boxed cereals, pancake mixes, syrup, peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, and pasta and sauces. Other items needed include toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, diapers, feminine products, dish soap, laundry soap, and body soap.

WoodStarke Festival Planned Tomorrow in Knox

woodstarkeThe inaugural WoodStarke Festival at Wythogan Park in Knox promises a day full of healthy, family fun. A group of volunteers has put together a slate of activities. They will be set to a background of music by local, original bands from genres ranging from bluegrass and bagpipes to hard rock. New Moped Laws in Effect Jan. 1

mopedsIndiana’s new moped laws will take effect in January. They will be split into two classifications both of which must be registered with the BMV.

Class A Motor Driven Cycles will include all mopeds and scooters with an engine size of 50cc or larger. They must be insured. The operator must be a licensed driver with a motorcycle endorsement and must wear a helmet until age 18.

Pence Orders Flags Flown at Half-Staff for Patriot Day

 Gov. Mike Pence has ordered flags across Indiana to be flown at half-staff today in observation of Patriot Day. They should be lowered at sunrise and remain at half-staff until sunset. Congress established the observation in 2001 in memory of the 2,977 people killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Individuals and businesses who fly flags are also directed to lower them in observation of the national day of mourning.

 

Farmers Market Festival Planned in Winamac

 The Farmers Market Festival returns to downtown Winamac on Saturday. Festivities begin with the Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast from 7 until 10 a.m. EDT in the AlightLife parking lot at the corner of Monticello and Pearl Streets. Live music gets under way at 11, followed by a puppet show at 1. Local craftsmen and artisans will have their wares available, and food and treats will also be offered. Activities include face painting and games for the kids.
