There are scammers using technology to impersonate phone numbers of local businesses that show up on Caller ID. These are robo calls and the scammers use familiar looking numbers in hopes you will answer the call and take your money.
They purchase a list of phone numbers and use spoofing technology to trick callers into picking up the phone. They sometimes use your phone number because it is not blocked.
A child recently had his finger bitten at the pet store that is located at 1700 S Heaton Street in Knox. Though signs are posted warning customers to keep fingers away from cages since animals are unpredictable, a child sustained a minor injury.
Due to this recent incident, the store owner Sue Webb was asked to cease selling rodents within city limits by July 31st. She sells her domestically-bred rats and mice to individuals for carnivorous reptiles. According to Webb it makes up 50 percent of her business.
Officials in Pulaski County remain hopeful of landing a hotel. Wisconsin-based Cobblestone Development is looking for local investors to help construct a 44-bed, businesses friendly hotel comparable to a Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn. Continue reading

Unfortunately those struggling financially can be the most vulnerable to scams. The federal government as well as Indiana general attorney,Greg Zoeller, took action against schemers who have taken more than $14,000 from unsuspecting homeowners. On Thursday, Zoeller filed lawsuits against seven companies running fraudulent mortgage rescue or relief schemes.
A Kewanna man was sentenced last week in U.S. District Court to two years and three months in prison and two years of supervised release after a jury found him guilty of making false statements during firearm acquisition. Continue reading
A Bremen man was sentenced last week in U.S. District Court to two years probation and ordered to pay $34,126.25 in restitution for 18 months worth of unemployment benefits. Court documents indicate Timothy Heckaman, 53, previously pleaded guilty to the felony offense of theft of government property. Continue reading
Access from multiple side roads to U.S. 31 in St. Joseph County will be limited through the end of the year. Indiana Department of transportation officials say the closures are necessary as the new U.S. 31 construction is tied in to the existing U.S. 31. Motorists can still access U.S. 31 by way of Main Street, Kern Road and Ireland Road. However, crews will shut down access to U.S. 31 from Jewell Avenue, Hildebrand Street, Yoder Street, Dice Street, Pulling Street, Gilmer Street, Pasadena Avenue Detroit Avenue, and Lucinda Street.

A Starke County girl received a new award for outstanding gardening skills at the 4-H Fair. Knox resident Ashlie Fields was named the 4-H grand prize gardening winner. In addition, she was recognized by the fair as the Top Green Leaf 4-H Garden Award winner.

A Winamac woman faces a charge of battery on a law enforcement officer. Donna Fay Campbell, 36, is accused of hitting, kicking and throwing a can of Pepsi at Pulaski County Sheriff’s Deputy Michelle Jackson when she responded to a home in the 4400 block of County Road 600 West Wednesday afternoon. A Winamac Eagle Scout candidate is taking community service to the extreme. The 18-year-old Eastern Pulaski School Senior said he was inspired to build a skate park for the community as his Eagle Scout project.
Clark Gudas of Boy Scout Troop 229 said the idea first developed a few years back.
Needles, syringes and anything sharp can be disposed of during the household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, Aug. 23 in LaPorte.
Personnel at the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department have had a recent influx of the disposal of needles and syringes in the lobby’s drop box. To reduce a health hazard, cap the needles and place them in an empty plastic detergent bottle and dispose of them in one of the seven hazardous waste collection events held by the LaPorte County Solid Waste District. Free hazard stickers are available to place on those bottles to warn of its contents.

An Argos woman authorities in Marshall County say dumped a terrier mix dog in front of a house on 19th Road last week faces an animal cruelty charge. Police say Kim Paul brought the female dog to the Marshall County Humane Society on Wednesday, July 16 and said she no longer wanted the animal. Employees there told her the shelter was full. An Argos man faces drunk driving and drug possession charges after an early morning traffic stop in Lapaz. A Marshall County Police Officer pulled a vehicle driven by Victor Rundberg, 51, over at on Michigan Street near Vandalia Street around 1:20 a.m. A police department news release indicates he failed a certified test and was in possession of a substance believed to be cocaine. Rundberg was booked into the Marshall County Jail on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, operating a vehicle while intoxicated controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.
Starke County’s newest school is set to open on Friday, Aug. 1. The Crossing has leased the old Sears retail location south of Knox on U.S. 35 for it’s alternative school. The mission statement on the Goshen-based nonprofit organization’s website says The Crossing believes in “empowering struggling students to become contributing members of their communities through academics, job training and faith-based mentoring.” Continue reading
The year-round campsite leases at the Bass Lake Beach and Campground run afoul of the guidelines under which the state turned the property over to the county. The Land and Water Conservation Fund does not allow for permanent enclosed structures like campers to be placed on public campsites. President of the Commissioners Jennifer Davis advised Bass Lake Beach and Campground manager Richard Callahan and his attorney, David Wallsmith, that the practice will no longer be allowed.
