The West Central School Board has a work session planned for next week.
Superintendent Don Street said the board will not be focused on one single item. The board will be discussing the overall scope of school operations at the corporation and the strategic plan.

Officers from the LaPorte City Police Department will be on the roads for another round of Operation Pull Over safety patrols. The enforcement began Tuesday and will continue until Feb. 21.
Patrol officers will work 50 hours to enforce seat belt and child restraint laws, as well as all other traffic laws in the city. Captain Tom Heath said the department chose the time around Valentine’s Day to conduct these patrols because one of the best things to do for loved ones is to be sure they are properly restrained in a vehicle.
In 2014, the LaPorte City Police Department investigated 550 property damage accidents and 110 personal injury traffic crashes. A total of 114 people were injured. Of those people, 16 were not restrained. Statistics show that February was the month with the second highest number of accidents, according to a news release.

A LaPorte man is wanted by police after failing to register as a sex or violent offender.
Sir F. Moore, 36, is classified by the State of Indiana as an offender against children. He has a lifetime requirement to register. He was previously convicted of child molesting, a Class C felony, in the LaPorte County Circuit Court. He also has a previous conviction of failure to register as a Class D felony.
He is listed as homeless in LaPorte County and officials are asking for the public’s assistance in locating him. If you have information on his whereabouts call (219) 326-7700 ext. 2320.

The Town of Winamac was recently clued into an alleged attempt to commit a fraudulent transaction by a piece of returned mail.
During last night’s Winamac Town Council meeting, it was learned that the Town received mail containing a check that was considered undeliverable to the eastern portion of the U.S. The Town’s return address was used in the fraudulent check. Continue reading →
The Pulaski County Council last night did not act on the change in personnel at the county highway department.
Council President Jay Sullivan looked over the paperwork and commented that the personnel change did not include a change in the money budgeted for the two positions. He believed that the only reason the council would need to act was if there was an additional appropriation or transfer because salaries would change. Two employees changed job descriptions.
The commissioners voted in January to appoint a person as general foreman. That is the usual action of the highway superintendent. Terry Ruff was placed into that position while Travis Holiday was dropped to a foreman position.

A Knox native is the latest full-time addition to the North Judson Police Department. The town council recently approved the hiring of Officer Brack Rowe. He’s a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and lives in Starke County with his wife and two children. Continue reading →
The Knox City Council members will review another revised dumpster ordinance for approval on the second reading when they meet tonight.
City Attorney David Matsey had slimmed down the ordinance after receiving comments from the Knox Plan Commission members. The ordinance only restricts the use of dumpsters zoned R-1, R-2, R-3 and R-4 on the public right of way. It also includes a restriction of dumpsters on private property. The revised version that the council will look at tonight will include wording that dumpsters are allowed on private property as long as they are behind the front of the house in a fenced area and they are permitted to be there by a building permit. A dumpster may also be placed on the property for 10 days out of a 30 day period once a year. It was also suggested to include the ordinance bureau guidelines for fines.
Time is running out for donations to be made that will help complete a downtown project in Knox.
30 high school seniors have been working on plans to develop a Serenity Garden. That space is expected to be completed this spring before classes let out for the summer. The project aims to beautify the Knox downtown. Continue reading →
Join the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Foundation for a special ceremony today commemorating the Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Fund. Officials will unveil a plaque honoring his generous gifts to the Poor Handmaids and their ministries at The Center at Donaldson. Doc Bowen resided at the Catherine Kasper Life Center until his death in May of 2013.
The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Foundation created the Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Fund to commemorate Dr. Bowen’s outstanding years of public service and his service to the Poor Handmaids and the ministries at The Center at Donaldson. Dr. Bowen also served as honorary chairman of the foundation’s campaign to build assisted living and a college residence hall.Continue reading →
The Starke County Success Coalition has developed a few areas of focus they hope will improve access to post-secondary education.
The newly formed group is looking to provide greater access to technical training and apprenticeships, as well as college. Their efforts apply to both youth and adults in Starke County. Continue reading →
The last day to file for the Knox City Municipal Election was Friday at noon in the Starke County Clerk’s Office.
The newest candidates include Democrat Angelo Masuka for city court judge while Democrat Dorine Godinez filed for the at-large seat on the Knox City Council.
Any candidate in the City of Knox election who wishes to withdraw from the ballot can do so today.
The Starke County Commissioners have filled two of the four vacant seats on the county’s Convention and Visitors Commission Board of Directors. The nine-member panel was established according to state guidelines, which outline the political balance and other qualifications to serve. Continue reading →
The Pulaski County Commissioners and the Pulaski County Council will meet in joint session tonight.
One item the joint board is expected to discuss is the change in the salary ordinance in the highway department. When the commissioners met on Jan. 19, the members voted 2-1 to appoint a person in the position that is second in command at the department. The highway superintendent normally makes that appointment, but Commissioner Bud Krohn, Jr., who spearheaded the move, called it a political change. He presented the change for a vote. Terry Young also voted in favor of the change while Commission President Larry Brady was the dissenting vote.
The North Judson Police Department is adding another officer, only this one works on four legs.
It was announced Friday that a K-9 unit will be joining the North Judson Police force. This is the first K-9 that will work for the department. The 6-year-old Dutch Shepherd name Gunner has completed years of training with a certified American K-9 Association outlet. Continue reading →
The Hamlet Police Department is taking proactive steps in order to protect unattended homes and businesses in the winter or while families are on vacation.
The House Watch Program allows homeowners to complete an application for extra patrol around their homes when out of town. While most people have someone available to watch homes, some aren’t able to find a sense of security.
