Starke County Commissioners Lower Speed Limit on State Road 8
The speed limit on State Road 8 east of Knox has been lowered from 55 to 45 miles per hour in anticipation of opening the new Starke County Jail in a few months. INDOT did a quick study based on a request from local officials and agreed to reduce the speed limit out to the railroad tracks due to the increased traffic count that the jail will create. Contractors Register for Sidewalk Replacement Program
Knox officials are looking toward spring. They encourage contractors interested in participating in the city’s Residential/Business Sidewalk Replacement Program to register with the city.
Contractors need to go to the Knox Planning Commission office at 101 West Washington Street between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until April 10. Proof of insurance must be provided.

Through their Adopt-a-Hunter program, the Eric Corey Foundation allows those with physical challenges to get away from the recurring doctor’s visits that many live with on a daily basis. The foundation was started after the late 15-year-old, who was an avid hunter, was diagnosed with ALS.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Ready for Next Step in Renovations
Eastern Pulaski Schools are expected to take some action regarding their building project.
The School Corporation has been working for some time to update schools for improved safety upgrading restrooms, and replacing floors in the gyms. The project is estimated to cost about $14-million. Architectural plans were largely finalized in January. Continue reading
North Judson-San Pierre Looking for Conversation Starter in Documentary
North Judson-San Pierre Schools are hoping a film can start a conversation on the future of their school services.
For three days in February, the school corporation will be showing the film “Rise Above the Mark.” The documentary attempts to explain some of the challenges faced in classrooms in the United States.

West Central School Board Approves E-Learning Application
West Central School Corporation students could make up school days missed if the Department of Education approves the corporation’s application to incorporate e-learning days into the school calendar.
Superintendent Don Street said students have missed four days of school due to snow so far this semester.
“We have to built-in snow days so we will go to school on February 16 and April 20 to make up two days. Currently, we have two days that are still outstanding,” said Street.
Knox Man Arrested In Plymouth Theft Case
The Plymouth Police Department has arrested a Knox man after an incident initially reported in December.
Officers received information from an employee of Rent-A-Center in Plymouth. According to a press release, a theft from the location had allegedly occurred, but exactly what was stolen is not being disclosed at this time.

Starke County Commissioners Accept 4-Way Stop Recommendations
The Starke County Commissioners have authorized the addition of a four-way stop at a county intersection based on traffic surveys conducted by Purdue University. Signs will be added at the intersection of 350 East and 250 North due to the lack of sight distance that cannot be remedied by trimming trees and other growth. The report indicates one accident has occurred there and numerous complaints have been lodged. Continue reading
West Central School Board Approves Turbine Maintenance Agreement
The West Central School Board members discussed the wind turbine maintenance agreement during this week’s meeting.
Superintendent Don Street said they looked at maintenance agreements from other schools and decided on a provider.
Economy Auto Donates to Starke County Food Pantry
A successful Starke County business owner gives back to the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry. Economy Auto in Knox collected food and donations from customers during the month of January. Owner George Mammarella recently presented Community Services of Starke County Executive Director Joan Haugh a check for $1,000 from the business along with $68 from a donation can at the business and several totes of food given by customers. Haugh says cash and nonperishable food donations to the Starke County Food Pantry are always welcome.
Knox High School Students Top Finishers in JAG Competition
Two Knox High School students were among several students who were recognized as top finishers in the JAG Career Development Conference.
Approximately 110 students from eight schools gathered to compete for a place in the state competition in one of eight skill categories and outstanding senior nominee. The events included career presentation, cover design, creative solutions, critical thinking, employability skills, public speaking, writing skills and financial literacy.

Kankakee Valley Broadcasting Celebrates MAX 98.3 FM Launch
Join the staff of Kankakee Valley Broadcasting for today’s ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch of WYMR-FM, MAX 98.3. The 6,000 watt radio station is licensed in Culver and Plymouth and is a sister station to K99.3 WKVI FM and Kountry KVI 1520 AM, both of which are licensed in Knox. The stations share an air staff and news department and play a similar mix of hit music from the 1970s through present day. Continue reading
Myers Pleads Not Guilty
A not guilty plea was entered for Stanley Myers, 70, in an initial hearing in Pulaski County Circuit Court. He is charged with six counts of child molesting.
According to court documents, the Monterey man is accused of child molesting on six different occasions with six-year-old and seven-year-old children. The acts were allegedly committed over a period of time. Each incident reportedly occurred at a home on 750 North in Monterey.
Two Arrested in Burglary Investigation
A pair of suspects was arrested Wednesday in connection with a burglary investigation.
The initial investigation began as an unauthorized control of a vehicle. Police officers had been looking for a vehicle that was stolen by Stephanie Pahl, 28. She had allegedly taken the car from her mother. Pahl was wanted on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.
Starke County Highway Department Wins National Award
The Starke County Highway Department is the recipient of a National Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award from the Salt Institute. They were honored for excellence in environmental consciousness and effective management in the storage of winter road salt. The county is one of 12 facilities in the United States and Canada to receive the honor this year and the first county in the nation to win the award since it was established in 2012. Culver Town Council Irons Out EMS Issues in Work Session
The Culver Town Council continues to discuss its EMS Department.
During a work session meeting on Wednesday, the Council held talks that involved a few of the problems facing the Emergency Medical Services Department. Previous reports have indicated that a lack of volunteers may be preventing adequate operations.

State Approves Starke County Budgets
The State Department of Local Government Finance has approved the Starke County General Fund budget as presented. Auditor Kay Chaffins shared that news with the county commissioners Monday evening. She says the 100-percent approval is a testament to the hard work done by the county council and department heads to hold the line on spending. Continue reading
Starke County Commissioners Bless Revised EMS Job Description
Starke County EMS Director Keith Emigh has the blessing of the county commissioners to revise a job description within the ambulance service to create an EMS 2 position. That person’s job responsibilities will include hiring and training new staff, oversight of all medics and handling many of the day-to-day operational duties of the service. He or she will report directly to Emigh, who told the county commissioners the new position will ease his workload considerably. The position was posted earlier this week, and Emigh will interview the candidates and do the hiring. He did need the commissioners’ approval of the revised job description. Continue reading
