Indiana Sheriff’s Association Offers Scholarships

 
 

Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin says college scholarships are available from the Indiana Sheriff’s Association for qualified high school seniors or college students pursuing a career in criminal justice studies.

The Indiana Sheriff’s Association Scholarship Fund will award approximately 40 $500 scholarships to Indiana residents who are a current member of the association or a dependent child or grandchild of a current member. They must also attend an Indiana college or university, major in a law enforcement field and enroll as a full-time student. Continue reading

LaPorte County Man Found Trapped under Tractor

 
 

A LaPorte County man was found dead after his ex-wife discovered him trapped under a farm tractor in the backyard of his home on Tuesday afternoon.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence in the 16000 South block of State Road 39, approximately three miles south and east of Hanna. The ex-wife of the victim had gone to check on the 78-year-old man’s well-being and found him on the property.

Influenza is a respiratory virus that can lead to various symptoms such as a stuffy nose, coughing, and body aches according to the Centers for Disease Control. This year, a stronger strain of the Influenza A virus is spreading in the U.S.

Oregon-Davis School Board Reorganizes, Discusses Board Compensation

The Oregon-Davis School Board member Christopher Lawrence took the oath of office at the beginning of last night’s school board meeting as he was elected for another term to the board in the November election. After that was complete, the board reorganized. Lawrence respectfully stated that he thought it was time for someone else to lead the board and took his name out of consideration for board president. Kurt Hayes was elected president of the board with a unanimous vote. Andrea McIntosh was elected vice president while Shirley Budka will serve as board secretary. Those board positions were also approved by a unanimous vote.

The school board voted to retain their regular meeting schedule on the third Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. CT. They may call special meetings or work sessions as necessary. The measure passed by majority vote of 4 to 1. Lee Nagai abstained from the vote.

Plymouth High School Students Participate in National Day of Service

Plymouth High School Key Club members participated in a National Day of Service on Monday to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Several students were at the Plymouth Fire Department washing fire trucks while others were lifting and carrying boxes down flights of stairs to help organize things at the Marshall County Museum. The animals at the Marshall County Humane Society got some exercise Monday morning when the students took them out for walks and played with them. The students also cleaned the cages and gave the animals food and fresh water.

 Members of the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce are currently accepting nominations for the H.J. Halleck Community Service Award.

A Pulaski County resident is recognized each year for his or her outstanding community spirit. The award winner is honored for his or her time spent on improving the life in Pulaski County through a variety of projects. Those who are nominated have willingly given time and energy without the gratitude and recognition they deserve.

LaPorte County Man Found Dead in Apartment

 
 

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department and the coroner are investigating the death of a 57-year-old Michigan City man. The man, whose name has not been released by authorities, was found dead inside his apartment Monday morning. Police were let into the apartment by the manager of the Woodland Crossing Apartment Complex after neighbors had called to report inactivity.

Investigators from the sheriff’s detective bureau were called to assist at the scene, according to a sheriff’s department news release. Investigators do not have any information that foul play was involved based on evidence at the scene. However, police say they are waiting for more information from the coroner before making a final determination.

Relatives of the decedent have been notified.

Police Investigate Plane Crash in LaGrange County

 
 

A small plane crashed near a residential building near Shipshewana early Monday evening and no one was injured in the accident.

According to our reporting partners at WNDU-TV, a mechanical issue caused the 18-year-old pilot, Jordan Stoltzfus, to perform an emergency landing northwest of Shipshewana. The report stated that the plane landed into a propane tank near an unoccupied, residential building at 9595 W. 450 N. When LaGrange County emergency responders arrived at the scene, Stoltzfus reported no injuries.

Knox Residents to Help Decide Fireworks Date

 Knox Mayor Rick Chambers and the Knox City Council members want the citizens of Knox decide when to hold the fireworks celebration in July.

The council members held discussion last week on a date to hold the fireworks. The Fourth of July is on a Saturday this year which would be the ideal date to hold the celebration, but the council doesn’t want to interfere with family plans residents may have for the day. However, it is the official holiday and the council members thought it would be appropriate to hold the display on the Fourth of July.

Starke County Commissioners, Building Corporation to Award Jail Courtroom Bids

The Starke County Commissioners are expected to award bids this evening for the interior build-out of the Starke County Jail Courtroom. The commissioners received eight bids for general services and four each for mechanical and electrical work. Representatives from Skillman Corporation took them under advisement at the Jan. 8 bid opening and have reviewed them to make sure they meet the specifications outlined in the project documents. Base bids range from a low of $167,500 to a high of $227,250, with five alternates each. Continue reading

Flu Causes High Number of Deaths in Indiana

 
 

The flu has been the cause of 85 deaths in Indiana this year. Officials have determined that that number is higher than the total number of deaths in each of the previous ten years.

The flu season has just reached the halfway point.

State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams says it’s important to get to a health care provider right away if you have flu symptoms. Those symptoms include a fever of 100 degrees or greater, headache, fatigue, cough, muscle aches, or sore throat.
