Starke County Sheriff’s Department Respond to Accidents
Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department were called to two accidents Monday afternoon. One accident occurred at the intersection of Range Road and State Road 10 while another occurred on U.S. 30 and Frontage Road.
State Road 10 will be closed for some time while officers complete their investigation.
Additional information will be given once the investigations are complete.
Paving Prep to Begin At State Road 8 and 300 East
Motorists who use State Road 8 to travel west of Knox may want to find a new route for the next few weeks due to continued work to rebuild the intersection with Starke County Road 300 East. Starting Wednesday, traffic on the highway will be reduced to one lane with flagmen so the edge of the highway can be saw cut and removed to begin preparation for paving. Continue reading
Local County Entities Receive Local Government Cooperation Award
The decision to being dark fiber optic infrastructure into the counties of St. Joesph and Marshall plus the City of Plymouth has prompted the Association of Indiana Counties to award county officials for that effort.
The entities were the recipient of the 2014 Local Government Cooperation Award for the Metronet project.
The Metronet project that extends dark fiber from St. Joseph to Marshall County will assist businesses in obtaining the highest speed of internet available to streamline operations and to create economic development. The project was funded by Marshall County government, St. Joseph County government and local businesses.
Marshall County EMA Director Encourages Safety this Winter Season
It may be a little early to think about snow and ice, but county officials are already making plans for when system and lake effect snow could impact travel in the area.
Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery informed the Marshall County Safety Committee last week of the different levels of advisories that could be issued during severe weather this winter.
JAG Students Helping Promote Literacy to Homeless
Several students in the Job’s for America’s Graduates (JAG) program are helping to promote literacy among the homeless.
Students were given approximately 40 books, ranging from elementary level to adult reading. Students were then tasked to select a homeless shelter or community location where services are available for the homeless and deliver those books.
Knox High School is one of the schools that participates in the JAG program. The educational program is dedicated to helping at-risk students overcome barriers to high school graduation.
Purdue Extension Pulaski County Hosting Poverty Simulation
Purdue Extension of Pulaski County is having a poverty simulation tomorrow. The simulation is designed to sensitize those who frequently deal with low income families. It’s an interactive educational experience that teaches people what it is like to live at a poverty level. Continue reading
WKVI Team Waiting Tables for World Hunger Relief
The WKVI staff is set to serve you dinner tonight at Pizza Hut in Knox. Management at the restaurant has invited the radio station to take part in a tip night from 4 until 8 p.m. Radio station employees will be waiting tables with help from the Pizza Hut staff, and all tips will go to World Hunger Relief. Please tip generously. Last year the WKVI staff raised more than $300 for charity.
Another Vocational Program in the Works
The Starke County Economic Development Foundation (SCEDF) is looking to bring life back into the vocational building on the Oregon-Davis school campus to begin an automation robotics and equipment maintenance program as an extension of vocational programs through the SCILL Center.
According to Ron Gifford, the SCEDF will assist in seeking a way to fund the program full-time and to acquire equipment. A pilot program started this year with several students in the eighth grade through the tenth grade enrolled in the program.

Marshall County Highway Department Ready for Winter Season
The Marshall County Highway Department is ready to handle winter weather, according to Jason Peters, Supervisor of County Highways.
He commented on the status of the department in a Marshall County Safety Committee meeting this week. Peters said the highway department has a good system of when to send out workers to clear the roads of snow and ice.

City of Knox Receives Thanks from WoodStarke Representatives
The Knox City Council members received praise from the WoodStarke representatives this week for their support of the first festival of its kind on Sept. 13.
The city was presented a thank you note for their efforts. The festival featured local artists, local music, HealthLinc’s mobile dental unit, a cornhole tournament, dance and exercise classes, a Moving Starke County Forward One Mile at a Time walk and a county-wide scavenger hunt.
Kewanna, Wanatah Fall Festivals Continue Today
The Kankakee Valley area has two fall festivals continuing today. The annual Kewanna Fall Festival and the Wanatah Scarecrow Festival both have full schedules of events. Both will start the day off with breakfast and continue their activities throughout the day.

Jefferson Jackson Dinner Scheduled in Starke County Tomorrow
Starke County’s Jefferson Jackson Dinner will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox.
Joe Bock, the Democratic candidate for the Second District Congressional seat in November’s General Election, will speak along with Richard W. “Rich” Ludington who is running for the seat in the Indiana House of Representatives in District 16.
Social hour will begin at 3 p.m. with dinner following an hour later. Route 10 Bar and Grill is catering the meal.
North Judson Fire Under Investigation
Firefighters from the North Judson-Wayne Township and San Pierre Fire Departments spent about two hours extinguishing a trailer full of tires that caught fire last evening in North Judson. They were dispatched to the fire at the end of Sheridan Avenue at the old Cravens factory around 5:30 p.m. Fire Chief Joe Leszek tells WKVI news the cause has not yet been determined. No injuries were reported.
Initial Hearing Set for Former Highway Superintendent
Former Marshall County Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck will appear for his initial hearing in Marshall County Superior Court on Tuesday, Oct. 21. at 8:30 a.m. ET.
An indictment against Haeck was recently returned by a grand jury in Marshall County and he was summoned to appear in court on a charge of theft. It is alleged that Haeck stole $12,351.41 from the county in 2012 and 2013. The money reportedly came from the sale of scrap metal.
Cleanup in Hamlet Continues
Storms that recently swept through the Kankakee Valley area hit the town of Hamlet hard. Limbs and trees have been removed from the main roads leading in and out of Hamlet, but more cleanup in the residential areas is still needed. Continue reading
Oregon-Davis School Board Praises School Resource Officers
Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Greg Briles praised the newly installed school resource officers for their efforts in school safety.
Briles told the school board members this week that Hamlet Town Marshal Frank Lonigro and Patrolman Kyle Hinds have been working to create plans in case of an emergency.
