The West Central School Board members approved the final reading of the firearms policy at their board meeting this week.
Superintendent Don Street explained in an earlier report that the policy includes language that doesn’t allow a firearm inside the school building. A firearm will not be allowed on school property unless it is inside a locked vehicle and out of sight of the public, as outlined in the state statute.
A local funeral director is a newly appointed member of the Indiana Funeral Education Foundation board of directors.
Jon Frain of Frain Mortuary in Winamac is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington and Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. The foundation supports continuing education, scholarship and other financial aid opportunities for funeral directors and other professional in the field. They also educate the general public on the value of the funeral and the role of the funeral director in society and make charitable contributions on behalf of the funeral service.
A Republican caucus/town convention was held Thursday night to put two candidates on the November ballot for the Culver Town Council.
Five Republican candidates were running for vacancies on the council. Those candidates were David Beggs, Robert K. Cooper, Jean Rakish, Sally Ricciardi, and Gilbert Standley.

Verdicts have returned in a jury trial in Starke Circuit Court.
Eric Taylor was found not guilty on charges of dealing in methamphetamine, a Class B felony, and possession of chemical reagents or precursors with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine, a Class D felony. The jury was deadlocked on the last four counts for a mistrial. Those counts included possession of methamphetamine, possession of a syringe, maintaining a common nuisance, and possession of paraphernalia.
A public hearing is set for Monday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. CT to hear comments on a proposed lease between the Davis Township Building Corporation and Davis Township for a new fire station.
The project includes the construction of a fire station that will house eight fire trucks and an adjacent space for a community center. The new fire station will be located just east of the Starke County Fairgrounds in Hamlet off of Indiana Street.
Uninsured youngsters who still need back-to-school physicals and shots can get both at HealthLinc in Knox. The facility is celebrating National Health Center Week today with an open house from 3 until 6 p.m. Appointments are necessary to get physicals and shots, but a number of other services are available to walk-in customers. The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce will present Germanfest tomorrow in downtown Winamac.
Games and activities for kids and adults will begin at 3 p.m. including a cornhole contest and create-a-canvas. The completed canvas projects will be sold at a silent auction where proceeds will benefit the Germanfest event for next year.
Blood is in short supply in Indiana. American Red Cross officials say donations dropped significantly over the summer. That’s due in part to donors taking vacations. Also, many blood donation drives occur at schools, which are out for the summer.
Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies and Plymouth Police Department officers are looking for two escapees from a secure detention center in southern Indiana.
According to Marshall County officials, Kody Whiteman and Adam Waggoner, both age 17, escaped the detention center in the early morning hours of Aug. 3 and reportedly stole a vehicle. Officers in Marshall County recovered the stolen vehicle in West Township on Aug. 5. On Aug. 6, deputies investigated two reports of theft where items were taken from two vehicles in the area where the stolen car was recovered.

Representatives from the Plymouth Tennis Club and City of Plymouth are pausing in their plan to develop new tennis courts at Centennial Park. The Starke County Commissioners Monday approved a $70,000 change order to add a right turn lane to the rebuilt intersection of State Road 8 and County Road 300 East. Two Steuben County fugitives were arrested by Knox City Police Department officers Wednesday afternoon.
Officers received a tip that Nancy Bailey, 30, and Kelly Moe, 31, were at a home in the 300 block of Spruce Dr. in Knox. When police arrived at the scene, they found the pair inside the home where they provided false names to the responding officers, according to the police report.
Doors will open to students next week at our area school corporations.
Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Greg Briles explained that some teachers have been training with Apple representatives to better understand how they can provide a more effective use of the technology that is available in the buildings. Briles said a back to school event is set for Monday.
“On Monday evening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. CT, we are having what we are going to start calling a traditional cookout,” said Briles. “We’ll have hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, iced tea, lemonade, and water for everybody if they’d like to come out and join us. They can go through the buildings. If any of the children want to bring their supplies in prior to the start of school on Wednesday, this would give them an opportunity to meet their teacher and get their supplies in there so they’re not having to carry everything on the school buses the first day.”
The academic year is off to a good start at Starke County’s newest school. Classes started last Friday at The Crossing. It’s a faith-based alternative school that offers a mix of classroom and vocational training to youngsters who have been expelled, dropped out of school or have otherwise fallen through the educational cracks.
