A pair of teenage boys who escaped Aug. 3 from a juvenile detention facility in southern Indiana are behind bars again. Kody Whiteman and Adam Waggoner, both age 17, were arrested without incident last night in Kosciusko County and are jailed in Marshall County. Continue reading

The new Starke County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center east of Knox on State Road 8 is still on schedule for a spring 2015 completion. The project is also on budget and features a number of state-of-the-art amenities like video visitation. The Eastern Pulaski School Board will meet tonight where the three school principals will have reports on the start of school. The staff has undergone professional development and the principals will be discussing what the teachers have been doing to prepare for the beginning of the school year. The first day of school is tomorrow.

Members of the Starke County Association of Firefighters will be active in the visitation and funeral for New Carlisle Assistant Fire Chief Jamie Middlebrook.
Middlebrook died Tuesday while fighting a fire at a LaPorte County business, K-Fex, near the intersection of U.S. 20 and 800 East. Visitation is Sunday from 2 until 7 p.m. ET at the Everest-Rohrer Auditorium at Bethel College while the funeral service will be on Monday, Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. at the college.
The Starke County Commissioners voted unanimously this week to reestablish two funds that were somehow discontinued by the state. Monday’s action on the cumulative capital development and cumulative bridge funds will allow the county to keep more of the property tax money it collects and spend money that is currently set aside.
The first human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Porter County.
Mosquitoes in 18 counties have tested positive for the virus so far this year. Marshall County is one of the 18 counties, according to the Indiana Department of Health. West Nile virus may be circulating in all 92 counties and you should take precautions to protect yourself against contracting the virus.
The Starke County EMS base in Grovertown will soon have Internet service again.
The county commissioners this week approved a contract with Mediacom for Internet, telephone and basic cable television service there at a cost of $89.95 per month. County information technology director Joe Short says Mediacom had a better price than CenturyLink, who quoted $105 per month for just Internet and telephone service. The $89.95 price is based on a three-year contract.
The West Central School Board members approved the final reading of the firearms policy at their board meeting this week.
Superintendent Don Street explained in an earlier report that the policy includes language that doesn’t allow a firearm inside the school building. A firearm will not be allowed on school property unless it is inside a locked vehicle and out of sight of the public, as outlined in the state statute.
A local funeral director is a newly appointed member of the Indiana Funeral Education Foundation board of directors.
Jon Frain of Frain Mortuary in Winamac is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington and Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. The foundation supports continuing education, scholarship and other financial aid opportunities for funeral directors and other professional in the field. They also educate the general public on the value of the funeral and the role of the funeral director in society and make charitable contributions on behalf of the funeral service.
A Republican caucus/town convention was held Thursday night to put two candidates on the November ballot for the Culver Town Council.
Five Republican candidates were running for vacancies on the council. Those candidates were David Beggs, Robert K. Cooper, Jean Rakish, Sally Ricciardi, and Gilbert Standley.
Knox residents in the East Lake and John Street areas no longer have to boil water. A second round of lab tests found no problems with water quality after the city changed three fire hydrants in that area earlier this week. Continue reading
