A local school corporation will have a new superintendent when classes start in the fall. This is Charles Mellon’s last day at West Central. He’s retiring after 34 years with the corporation. Mellon started there as an assistant principal in 1980 and worked his way into the front office.

“It is a great place to raise a family. Most things are centered around school and church in this community. That’s what we enjoyed. A lot of our staff that come in new stay. That’s a good sign that’s a good place to live and a good, strong school corporation,” Mellon told WKVI News. Continue reading →

Summer Safety: Don’t Leave Children Unattended in a Vehicle

Summer temperatures continue to soar, and although it may seem like common sense to never keep your child in a parked car, over the past 16 years more than 600 children have died of heatstroke due to being left unattended in a vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, on a 60 degree day, temperatures inside a car can reach well above 110 degrees quickly.

Gifts to Ancilla Scholarship Funds Help Local Students

If you are thinking about ways to leave a legacy to the community, Ancilla College officials urge you to consider setting up a scholarship fund to help students further their education. Executive Director of Institutional Management Todd Zeltwanger says donors can establish a named scholarship with a minimum contribution of $25,000. Body of Knox High School Graduate Found

Late last night, a boater and a member of the United States Coast Guard located 29-year-old Ron Wood, Jr.’s body approximately one mile off the shore of Lake Michigan near the far west border of Central Beach in Porter County, according to Indiana Conservation Officers. Continue reading →

Man Pleads Guilty to Manufacturing Methamphetamine in Car

A man was sentenced in Marshall Superior Court 1 on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state on a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine while traveling in a vehicle.

Gary Beatty, 27, admitted in court that on Sept. 17, 2013 he was manufacturing methamphetamine in his vehicle. A concerned citizen notified police of suspicious activity inside the vehicle and a traffic stop was initiated after a Marshall County deputy found that the license plate number returned to a different vehicle and it was expired. Beatty could not supply the officer with a valid registration and current insurance. As a result, the vehicle was impounded.

Candidates Needed to Fill Spots on General Election Ballot

There are still a few positions left open on the November election ballot in Pulaski County that need to be filled by Monday, June 30.

Clerk Tasha Foerg said there are vacancies in several advisory board positions as well as township trustee positions on both the Republican and Democrat tickets. She added that vacancies on the Republican ticket include surveyor and county council district 2. On the Democrat ticket, there are openings for assessor, clerk, coroner, county council district 4, and prosecutor.

Weaver joined a board composed of 14 members from Indiana where he and his fellow board members can review legislation that is being considered by the General Assembly and its potential impact on economic development efforts.

Ruth Sabin Home Celebrates 125 Years

6-27-14 Ruth Sabin Home picAs an 84-year-old woman who became a widow in 1886, Ruth Sabin found herself alone so she wished to develop a haven for other women like her. In an extraordinary act of philanthropy, she gave $25,000 toward land and construction of an institution. She didn’t stop there, she went on to establish a trust fund with an initial contribution of $33,000 to support the Ruth Sabin Home.

Keep Your Child’s Reading Skills Sharp this Summer

As daunting as those statistics may be, the staff at Henry F. Shricker Library in Knox is doing their part to get kids excited about reading.

South Bend Woman Arrested after Traffic Stop

A traffic stop initiated by an officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department resulted in the arrest of the driver.

Ashley Turner’s vehicle was pulled over Wednesday night on U.S. 31 near the intersection of 1st Road. The officer reportedly found marijuana, a substance believed to be methamphetamine and a controlled substance. The officer believed that Turner may be under the influence of a controlled substance.
